Speech Contests 101

Trust Toastmasters to turn anything into a contest!

Why Go To Speech Contests?

·         Even if you don't want to enter the contests, you can still help at any of these events.

·         We need people to act as judges, to count ballots, to time the speeches, and so on.

·         You can also probably learn a lot just by listening to the speeches and evaluations.

·         You will also meet many members from other Toastmasters clubs.

Speech Contest Dates

Each set of speech contests follows this sequence:

·         Calgary Sunrise Club Speech Contests

·         Area 48 Speech Contests

·         Division J Speech Contests

·         District 42 Speech Contests at the Spring Convention or the Fall Conference

The "International Speech Contest" continues on for 2 more levels:

·         Region IV Speech Contests at the Regional Convention each year in June

·         The world-wide Speech Contests at the Toastmasters International Convention each year in August

From the Club to the District level, we hold

·         2 speech contests in the Spring (International and Evaluation) and

·         2 in the Fall (Humorous and Table Topics).

Types of Speech Contests

International Speech Contest (Spring, through to August)

The "International Speech Contest" is held to choose the best speaker.  It is called this because it goes all the way to the "World Championship of Public Speaking" at the Toastmasters International Convention each year in August.  To enter this contest, you must have done at least 6 speeches from the basic "Communication & Leadership" manual.

·         Each contestant delivers a speech on any topic.

·         The speech must be 5 to 7 minutes long.

·         It must be original.

·         The judges select the best speaker.

Evaluation Contest (Spring)

The Evaluation Contest is held to choose the best speech evaluator.  Any member in good standing can enter this contest.

Here's how it works:

·         A 5 to 7 minute "Test Speech" is given.

·         All the evaluation contestants listen to the same speech and make whatever notes they want.

·         After the speech, the evaluation contestants have 5 minutes to prepare their evaluations.

·         The evaluation contestants come back into the contest room one at a time, and deliver their evaluations.

·         Note:  Each contestant will not hear any other evaluations before his or her own, but can stay to hear all the following evaluations.

·         Evaluations must be 2 to 3 minutes long.

·         The judges select the best evaluator.

Humorous Speech Contest (Fall)

The Humorous Speech Contest is held to choose the best humorous speaker.  Any member in good standing can enter this contest.

Each contestant delivers a speech on any topic.

·         The speech must be 5 to 7 minutes long.

·         It must be original, and it must have a theme.  That is, it cannot be a collection of one-liners like a night club routine.

·         The judges select the best speaker.

Table Topics Contest (Fall)

The Table Topics Contest is held to choose the best impromptu speaker.  Any member in good standing can enter this contest.

Here's how it works:

·         All the contestants except the first one leave the contest room.

·         The contestants come back into the contest room one at a time.

·         The contest toastmaster reads the topic to each contestant TWICE.  It must be read verbatim so each contestant gets exactly the same topic.  The topic must be general in nature so no special knowledge is needed.

·         Note:  Each contestant will not hear any other speeches before his or her own, but can stay to hear all the following speeches.

·         Impromptu speeches must be 2 minutes long.

·         The judges select the best impromptu speaker.
